Technique Tuesday: Surprise Pop Up Card Tutorial

The technique for today is a card fold known as a Surprise Pop Up Card.  It is named because when you pull the tag the card "pops up" and reveals a surprise.
Start with a 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" piece of cardstock.  You can stamp the cardstock first to add decoration.  I left mine blank so I could add other embellishments.  Put the cardstock in your paper trimmer with the short side at the top.  Then, line it up with the 3-1/2" mark and cut from 3/4" to 4-3/4".  Turn the card around  and make the same cut on the other side too.

Then put the cardstock in the paper trimmer with the long side at the top and line it up at 4-3/4". Cut from 3/4" to 3 1/2", connecting the two vertical lines.

With the long side at the top, line up the the end of the cardstock at 3-1/8" and score from 3/4" to 3-1/2".  Move down to 1-5/8" and score again from 3/4" to 3-1/2".  Then make the first score a mountain and the second a valley fold.

Use a circle punch to punch the top of the scored cardstock as well as one more piece of cardstock that measure 4-1/4" x 5-1/2".  This will becoming the back of the card.

Next take a piece of cardstock measuring 3-1/4" x 4-3/4".  I cut the corner and punched a hole in the top to make it look like a tag.

Next you need a 1/2" x 7" piece of copy paper (pulled out of my printer).  Wrap the paper around the tag loosely and secure the ends together.  This step is optional but helps guide the tag in and out of the card.

Now, attach the guide to the back of the scored cardstock.  Add Sticky Strip to the sides and bottom of the card, as well as to the bottom of the cut flap.

Push the top of the tag through the guide and then attach the bottom to the cut flap, lining up the bottom edges.  Then attach the second piece of cardstock that you punched a half circle into onto the back of the card.

Next it is time to decorate.  You can add any decoration that you like.  I added a small piece of DSP to the flap and then added the main panel image.

A strip of ribbon down each side and the card is complete.  The colors and hearts made me think of love, so I decided to make this card a wedding card.

To make sure the tag did not get stuck, I kept the decorations flat.  So, I sponged a Pool Party heart and then stamped the other images.

Pull up the tag to reveal the "surprise" part of the card.  Stamp your sentiment of decoration here.  I used the second part of the One in a Million sentiment.

The final card!  What kind of surprise will you put in your card?
